Hotel Chocolate Mother’s Day Review

I was very lucky this month to be sent some chocolate from Hotel Chocolat chosen from their Mother’s day range to review.
While I adore receiving chocolates, and please do feel free to send, when it’s for something special I like to have a memento of the occasion so I rather like Hotel Chocolats idea of presenting some of their irresistible favourites in a Jewellery Box.

This is a lovely box set at £20 in which you are sent a little trinket box with a mirror inside and 10 chocolates to treat yourself with.  The only downside to this is that you have to like praline! 6 of them were pralines 2 billionaires’ shortbread and 2 strawberry smoothies. I shared these out with my whole family and they all loved the chocolates but did agree 6 being the same were a bit of a shame.  However we all liked the fact that you did get something special to keep and which you can store some precious keepsakes in.

Personally I think the images speak for themselves! They have some wonderful gifts starting at below £5 so perfect for all budgets!

Wow its been a year since I started this and I have grown a huge number of lovely readers! I’ve had a couple of you ask for various posts that I wrote at the start so I thought I’d include here a list of links to some of your favourite reads. Do let me know which you prefer and have found the most useful!

Unsurprisingly at Number 1 Its the recipe for
pretty much fat free, full of veg amazing chocolate cake!
ps its gluten free to!

Number 2 – Its close between 5 minute boredoms busters and
free things to do as a family. So here are both.

&

Number 3 – Ways with coffee grains – So was it’s the cellulite buster or the Ant zapper?

Number 4 – Things to do in the garden! If yours are anything like mine  they’ll just come obsessed by the worms and leave it at that!

And of course I couldn’t leave without posting about what you can do with yoghurt! Removing balding or a face mask any one?

Paris, Milan.....Kingston!

London, Paris, Milan…Kingston! Well almost. With some amazing shops scattered within their somewhat stunningly light and open centre they have fashion to rival the best and without breaking the budget either! Obviously you don’t get the sunshine of Milan or the cafes of Paris (though the pastry’s in Costa are incredibly scrumptious) you do get lots of parking, restaurant’s and some amazing designers without the tramping round endless streets and you can submerse yourself for an afternoon and be back in time for tea!

From the stunning high fashion of LK Bennett to the beautiful hand stitched dresses in Yumi there appears to be drop dead gorgeous fashion to suit all budgets all in one place - Bentalls!

Now LK Bennett is just amazing, I think you all have to agree with me there but I always had them down as more special occasion wear, however, no longer. They have, fresh for this season, decided to approach the everyday and their designs (liberty of londons no less) are amazing. Plus and I didn’t know this, when you buy a pair of shoes or boots they offer in-house repairs. Rather than taking your beautiful shoes to timpster you can take them back to LK Bennett and get a proper job done on them! See you can’t really do that if you purchased them in Italy now could you?
I had a lovely tour of these shops today and next on the list was Crabtree and Evelyn and while some of us might have this down as a “for our mums” shop they gave us a free hand wash. I am not exaggerating here when I say I have never ever ever tried anything like this. It’s their 60 seconds hand treatment and I had hands to rival any childs or babies. I have never felt anything that soft! A mothers day present for anyone I think.
And then we have Yumi! Who I actually always pictured doing childrens clothes or something a bit different. Hmmm I fell in love with this store the split second I walked through the doors. And not for the prices either. Each item has been designed by one of Yumis designers and just has a certain something to them I haven’t seen for a while.  Classical flattering cuts or styles but different. They launched their crochet dress recently and it was sold out immediately and I can see why. They offer different ranges to for different styles and ages which I rather like! I also found these shoes instore which I love and now need to save for as they are must must must haves!
We then toured some lovely stores like Austen Reed where boys you can get your suit hand designed for you (less than the cost of flights to Italy) Esprit where all yummy mummys have to go! Comfy stylish vibrant colours (thankfully no sludgy colours) and then to T.M. Lewins who did you know actually make shirts for the Prime Minister! They also make for women and they have some seriously cute cufflinks! Picture bat and wickets and cricket balls for the boys. Seashells and highheels for the girls!

Then why not for the ultimate luxury after finishing shopping pop down to the only Nail Inc bar which serves alcohol and coffee! Perfect way to end the day to my mind. Plus if you feel like something  slightly different why not go for one of their new designs? From crackles (imagine gold glitter over base varnish) or my favourite is their new magnetic range. You can have this in most colours but I adore their deep red. So if you fancy an afternoon or day of boutique style stores, make up and manicures, coffee and pastry head down to Kingston and stop in at the Bentalls store!

CubbyKit Review

One wet weekend in February the doorbell went and a parcel arrived for my two little boys. It was a rather gorgeous box from art abd crafters Cubby Kit Needless to say the excitement of having a parcel at that age just for them meant everything was put on hold!

Cubby kit had sent us an outer space goody box. Each box to be delivered monthly is specifically designed for your little ones age. Each box contains everything (and I do mean everything) you need to have fun with your little ones so not having to go back and forth to get all the parts.
Playing with our kit lasted the whole morning and we could have easily carried it on the next day. With a 2 and 4 year old we need to get daddy to come and help but it’s a great way to get started playing with arts and crafts with your little ones and each box is themed so the activities all flow with each other.  It’s a pay monthly but you can cancel any time you like.  They also have some great ideas on their blog so pop over and take a look!

Savoury Pancakes

Unless you’re managed to be on another planet this weekend you’ll have some idea its Shrove Tuesday tomorrow which of course means PANCAKES!!

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!

Now we make the whole evening about pancakes (any excuse) but after many visits to this incredible creperie in Paris.  We are now converted to starting off with savoury crepes before hitting the sugar and lemon. Now we have them with brie, bacon and leeks inside but you can put in anything! Eggs and mushrooms and cheese, sausages? even and I have to say I haven’t tried this even mince sauce! So why not get a bit more creative tomorrow and try something a little different?

Savoury Pancakes
If you can’t get hold of  buckwheat flour, just use all plain flour instead. They’ll still taste great!
Serves 4
  • 60g plain flour
  • 60g buckwheat flour/plain flour
  • pinch of salt and pepper
  • ½ pint milk
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 8 large slices of ham/bacon ( I tend to chuck mine to cook in microwave first)
  • 200-300g brie/ camembert or cheddar
  • butter or vegetable oil for cooking
Place both the plain and buckwheat flour in a large mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper.
Whisk the milk and eggs together in a jug. Slowly pour the milk and eggs over the flour whilst whisking by hand, or with a mixer. Mix until you have a smooth batter.
Heat a large non stick pan on a medium heat and add a little oil or butter. Ladle in enough batter to cover the base of the pan. Swirl the pan around to get an even coating.
Cook until the edges of the pancake start to come away from the pan. Use a spatula to ease the pancake from the pan, then flip over.
Sprinkle over chunk or grated cheese and place the slice of ham on top.
Wait for the cheese to melt before having a peek under the pancake. Once there’s golden spots all over it’s ready.
Slide onto a plate, roll up and eat.

This Saturday we set off to Sheffield Park ready to take lots and lots of photos for the Country kids link up with Coombe Mill. Car and picnic were packed and we finally arrived. Shot through into the gardens where the lovely lady on the entrance gave us a map to find the tree which had just been struck by lightening to get just out the doors and the heavens opened! Being made of stern stuff we decided to brave it and find the tree and found some lovely ducks on the way but the children insistant of having their hats down and standing to admire the view resulted in a very very very quick trip and a long break the cafe!

So heres the few photos we took! Cool tree though?

Introuducing My Britmums Sponsor & 10 ways with yoghurt

I’ve got a sponsor to Britmums! How amazing is that?? And guess who it is? That’s right the incredibly scrummy Total Greek Yoghurt. Have you tried their products? They are (and yes I do admit I could be a bit bias here but I can assure you I’m not!) they are AMAZING! Even my grandma agrees with me about this and she’s a tough cookie to satisfy. Their yoghurt is thick and creamy and just disappears in your mouth. Their gorgeous range is from full fat to low fat to fat free without compromising on the taste which I think is quite difficult these days especially in this field. They also produce for us their split pots which are perfect for breakfast on the run, snacks or just when you want a treat and feeling down. Any how I thought well you know the standard things you can do with Greek yoghurt – chuck some fruits puree on and voila but how about all the other things you can do with this amazing product? Check out my top ten below!

1)       Beauty Products – Relax with a split pot in the bath and chuck some on your face and hair as well!

Face mask

Yogurt and Honey Mask

This yogurt and honey mask will leave your skin soft and moisturized.

Ingredients
1 Tbsp honey
1 cup plain yogurt
Directions
Mix honey and yogurt.
Apply mixture to face.
Leave on for 10 minutes.
Rinse and pat dry.

Hair mask

For dry, frizzed out hair, this recipe will bring back the moisture, leaving your hair silky and manageable.

Ingredients:
1 egg white
1/4 cup plain organic yogurt
1/4 cup mayonnaise
Directions:
Beat egg white until frothy.
Mix with yogurt and mayonnaise.
Massage into wet hair.
Cover with plastic shower cap or plastic wrap.
Leave in for 30 minutes, then wash out with a mild shampoo.
Rinse with very cold water.
Use monthly to moisturize hair.

2)       Cure for Baldness/dandruffI know right? Well I have been assured both these works! (I’m not going bald yet so haven’t personally tried this!)

15 mins in a thick paste helps kill off the bacteria that can cause baldness. Of course if its genetics I’m not too sure how much help this will be other than leaving you wonderfully moisturised! With dandruff and itchy scalps again leave on for 15mins but also add a bit of lemon juice in and this helps remove the dandruff to. Plus leaving you with amazing shine.

3)       Sauces Of course the post popular is

Cucumber Yogurt Sauce (Tsatziki or Raita)

1 cup of plain, whole milk Yogurt
2-3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
1 cucumber, peeled, deseeded, and thinly sliced.
1 teaspoon of salt
To de-seed the cucumber, cut the peeled cucumber in half, take a spoon and gently scrape the seeds out. After thinly cutting it, put in a sieve over a bowl and sprinkle the salt over it. The salt will pull the water out of the cucumber and you will start to see the water pool in the bowl. Leave for one hour. You can gently squeeze the cucumber slices to release more water as well at the end of the hour.
Mix the cucumbers, garlic, and yogurt in a bowl. Taste and add salt, if needed.
But why not try this as well

Yoghurt and Honey sauce – great with fish!

For sauce
1 cup low-fat Greek yoghurt
2 tbsps extra-virgin olive oil
2 tbsps water
1 tsp finely grated fresh lime zest
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp finely grated fresh orange zest
1 tsp fresh orange juice
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 to 1/2 tsp mild honey (to taste)

Whisk together and serve!

4)       Cooking! As you’ve seen from previous recipes you can use greek yoghurt in muffins, cakes, bread well anything really as replacement for milk or cream and it gives baking a like and fluffy (and lower fat!) taste. You can also use it to cool down a hot curry but why try it in this?

Roasted butternut squash soup with Greek yoghurt

Ingredients:
1 medium butternut squash
2 cups vegetable stock
1 cup low-fat Greek yoghurt
1/2 medium onion, finely chopped (1/4 cup)
1/4 tsp of hot chilli powder
1 clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 inch fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 tsp sea salt
A few leaves of fresh herbs, sage or rosemary
A few toasted pumpkin or squash seeds for garnish
2 tsps extra virgin olive oil

Instructions:
For squash
Cut the squash in half lengthwise. Lightly brush with cooking oil and place on a baking sheet with the cut side down. Bake at 190C for 45 minutes or until softened.

For soup
Heat the oil in a medium pan. Sauté the onions for one minute then add the garlic and spices (chili powder, ginger and garlic). Sauté another minute. Blend this onion mixture with two cups of roasted butternut squash, salt and fresh herbs while adding two cups of stock until smooth. Return the mixture back to the pan or pot and bring to a slow boil. Reduce the heat and stir in the yoghurt. Simmer on low heat for two minutes. Serve warm with some toasted pumpkin or squash seeds and some more Greek yoghurt on top.

5)       Ages tiles and bricks – This comes from my parents who have told me this since before I can remember( I did google it too and it does look like it works)

How To
Had an extension or tiles fallen off the roof? Apply a thin layer of yoghurt on and it speeds up the “aging” effect and lichen growth that you have on much older tiles.

6)       Replacement for mayo -  A fat free and I have to say tastier alternative to mayonnaise.

Method
Use in potato salad, tuna mayonnaise sandwich. Anything really for a tastier creamier taste!

7)       Fat free ice cream - Lighter than ice cream and if you use Total Greek fat free its fat free to!!

Fruit Frozen Yoghurt

Ingredients
1 ½ cups Total Greek 0% yogurt
2 cups frozen strawberries or 2 cups blueberries or 2 cups fruit, pieces of your choice
½ lemons, juice of
3 tablespoons strawberry jam or 3 tablespoons blueberry jam or 3 tablespoons other complementary jam
1 -4 tablespoon sugar
Directions
Freeze the yogurt, and the fruit, if you are starting with fresh.
It is best to put the yogurt into an ice-cube tray.
Puree the frozen yogurt and fruit in a food processor with the remaining ingredients, except the sugar.
They should be thoroughly blended.
Taste, and process in as much sugar as seems good to you.
Spoon into serving dishes and return to the freezer until dessert time.
If you wish to keep the yogurt in the freezer for up to a week, you may do so, in a covered container.
It will need to sit out at cool room temperature for 30 minutes to an hour before serving, or it will be too hard.

8)       Classic Greek breakfast – I couldn’t not include this. It is divine!

Method
Pop fresh and creamy yoghurt drizzled with lashings of golden honey and sprinklings of nuts. Sounds pretty fabulous to me!

9)       Deodorant. Presumably this is like the method behind the baldness in that when you sweat it’s the bacteria in your skin which makes you smell. So:

Method
Place a thick amount under arms for 15 mins and wash off.

10)   Treat! – I adore peanut butter late at night. It helps you sleep better too apparently so if you’re an insomniac give this a go.

Method
Mix equal parts non-fat Greek yogurt with peanut butter - tastes great with apples and has less fat than just plain peanut butter

A friend of mine has been desperate for been to show you how you can make a cake incorporating honey and less sugar to sweeten the taste so I thought why not also show you how to do this with less fat and use yoghurt to.

So here is a rather tasty Yoghurt cake for you.

If you have any fruit (raspberries, peaches etc) lying around stir it in at the last minute!

Ingredients:

150ml Sunflower oil
250g Caster Sugar
250g Self Raising Flour
2 Eggs
Juice of 1 large lemon
70g White sugar
2 tbsp Honey
25g toasted almonds

Method:

Preheat oven 180C
Grease a 8” round cake tin
Chuck into a food processor the yoghurt, oil, caster sugar, flour and eggs and blend until smooth
Pop into the tin and bake for 75mins.
Meanwhile put the lemon juice and sugar into microwave or on a low heat until sugar is dissolved and then stir in honey.
When the cake is baked (lightly springy to tough) turn out and transfer to as cake tin or plate and prick lots of little holes in and pout the warm syrup over the cake. Scatter with almonds and serve with cool total greek yoghurt.
